Home Based Lesson (HBL) Literature for Sec 2E and 2N

If you have been directed to this site, you know you are to complete one assignment for this week. Please complete all questions for the task neatly.

SECONDARY 2 EXPRESS / NORMAL ACADEMIC (LITERATURE)

Lesson #1 (1.5hrs)

Lesson objective: To introduce students to how to write a critical appreciation of a text.

Resources: Extract from “Jamaica Inn” by Daphne du Maurier (See the next post).

Instructions to students:

1) Read the extract in the next post and answer all the questions that follow on a piece of foolscap.

Lesson deliverable: Hand in your work to your Literature teacher once you return to school. If you are from 2E6, hand in your work to Ms Jumiah.

Prose - HBL_Literature_Sec 2EN_Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier

APPENDIX – Extract from “Jamaica Inn” by Daphne du Maurier

Joss was a great husk of a man; nearly seven feet high, with a creased black brow and a skin the colour of a gipsy. His thick dark hair fell over his eyes in a fringe and hung about his ears. He looked as if he had the strength of a horse, with immense powerful shoulders, long arms that reached almost to his knees, and fists like hams. His frame was so big that in a sense his head was dwarfed, and sunk between his shoulders, giving that half-stooping impression of a giant gorilla, with his black eyebrows and his mat of hair...his nose was hooked, curving to a mouth that might have been perfect once but was now sunken and fallen, and there was still something fine about his dark eyes, inspite of the lines and pouches and red flecks.

The best things left to him were his teeth, which were all good still, and very white, so that when he smiled they showed up clearly against the tan of his face, giving him the thin and hungry look of a wolf.

……........................................................................................................................................
Answer ALL the following questions. Quote briefly from the passage when you need to give evidence. Complete all answers on foolscap and hand in the work to your Literature teacher when you return to school.

PART ONE

1. What is your impression of Joss? Give ONE adjective to describe him and provide a reason why.

2. du Maurier uses imagery from the animal kingdom. Give ONE reason why she may have done this.

3. List all the animal imagery from the passage. Why did she choose these particular animals? Are they chosen merely for their physical qualities or could there be other reasons for her choice? Give reasons for your answer.

4. Are Joss's qualities positive or negative? What do you think is her opinion of Joss?

5. Do you think she has used her images effectively? Why do you say so? Would you want Joss to be your best friend? Why?

PART TWO

6. Now put all that you have written in about 150 to 250 words. This is called a critical appreciation of the passage or text. Remember to write in paragraphs. You may use your answer for qn 1 in paragraph 1, qns 2-3 for paragraph 2, and qns 4-5 for paragraph 3.

Powerpoint Presentation - maximum 10 slides

Ricky's group from 2008

Please read the instructions carefully for the 2nd last phase of your PP. This is the formal presentation that your group will do to get 30 marks. There are 3 parts to this phase.

PS: If your leader had given me the email address last week, I would have mailed the rubrics or marking scheme already and you would have a great advantage over others as only 2 leaders had sent me email. You would also know that the last part of your work would be your reflection.

1. The presentation - 10 slides. (advice- use pictures of your own playground to enhance your slides or to explain your concepts) . You should use a minimum of 8 slides as you may like to display your creation in a more glorious way :)

i) The title slide - Name of leader and members, Name of Playground, Target group

ii) Reasons why you had chosen the specific target group - this could be an emotional reason or a more mundane one.

iii) The characteristics of your target group

iv) Special features of your playground and connect to the specific needs of your target group

v) From scrap to playground slide (only one slide for this)

vi) Reasons for your layout/why your playground was designed in a particular way

WARNING:

Do NOT write out your whole presentation.

LIST only main ideas and the presenter will have the notes of explanation. DO NOT drown me in words on ppt.

2E4 - if you can get your ppt ready, I can listen to your presentation and give you advice. If you have a rough plan, you can also show it to me tomorrow for my input.

Exciting Giveaways! Get your free playground element today!

A free castle....
So many lovely goodies....

WOW!

You can get at least 2 free playground elements as I am recycling these projects. First come first served!
How to play the game
1. Read the blog :)
2. Look for me asap for your number tag.
3. In class tomorrow, I would call for the numbers and then you can pick 2 playground elements to use in your projects.
However, if you choose a main playground element (BIG one) then you can choose one only.

Dear Ariel
I had an interesting time reading what your group had to say about the playgrounds. I hope they are all in Tampines. I see that some of the playground elements are useful and revolutionary :) I am interested to know where the playground was that had the french information.

BluePrint for Playground

Actual playground

The blueprint or TOP VIEW of playground

Before you create your playground for your target group, it is important to have a complete plan or blueprint of your playground.

This plan is one that would allow you to create and plan for the whole playground. You have to put all playground elements in the correct position for maximum use for your target group. You also need to have a LEGEND for the various elements.

What you need to do:

1. Provide explanations about your elements and CONNECT these items to (a) your target group (b) your novel.

2. Indicate the type of materials you would use for each element and why.

3. Indicate the student responsible for these items.

4. Indicate if you have used recycled materials, reused them (from where and what) or reduced them (in what way) . The 3 Rs are imporant in your plan.

5. You can have a black and white drawing or you can actually do it in colour (but do not colour in class as you have to start building your playground tomorrow )

cheers

Attention Si Jing and Group

Aiyoh...Sijing!!

All my comments have disappeared from your comments box twice.
My comments for the last time..
1. I am glad yo are observant that there are some playgrounds that provide elements for different age groups. However, these children would still be 'ordinary' children no?2. The point about shelter is well-put. Singapore is equitorial and the afternoons are very hot in some months. This means playgrounds can become ghost towns which waste resources and space.3. How would you modify at least one of these playgrounds for your target group?

Playground Project 002

Fazrina's Group 2008

3 groups have uploaded the pics of playgrounds in Tampines as well as their critique. Well Done. I have already gone to the 3 blogs and made comments on them. Pls look at the comments so you can have a more fruitful session tomorrow.
1. Have your research ready - please upload research and give me the url if you had done Internet research or the bibliography of the book if you had done library research.
2. Picked out at least 5 to 6 factors that you will consider for your playground according to the target group.
3. Make sure you have a clear idea of the playground elements that you want for your target group. (look at 3)
4. Consider the SEL components before making a decision - Socio-emotional components. This means what elements would be good for the emotional and mental well-being of the target group? Colours? Art? Music?
PS. Remember that a playground should satisfy the safety issues, SEL as well as their physical self.

The Playground Project 001

QiJia's Playground in 2008

1. Read the assignment sheet for the Playground Project. I had given it to Che En this morning.

2. Decide on your target group for the project. Remember that different target groups would have different needs in a playground. You have to decide as group what these needs are and therefore what type of playground elements you need to have in your playground.

3. Go aound Tampines and take pictures of the types of playgrounds that you see. You should have at least 3 different playgrounds in different parts of Tampines so you can make a critical judgement about their general features. Your own playground would have to be very diffrent from the ones you see around this neighbourhood (depending on the chosen target group)

4. Upload pictures of the 3 Tampines playgrounds and write a 150- word critique about the good and bad points for the playgrounds. For eg, do they cater for different children, different ages, different needs. For this part, you should consider children like yourselves (not special needs children)

No 4 must be completed by 23/3 at 8 pm. Send word to me (in this post's comments section once you have completed the assignment).

I will post other instructions next week so be sure to check this blog during the holidays.

Notice for all

Good work everyone!
I have gone to all the blogs and marked the work /10 as well as the blogskin /5. The blogs that I had actually managed to read are Rachel's, Jiaying's (you need to redo please) , Nicholas's, Simin's, Cherlyn's. I cannot get to Che En's blog (still!!!) nor Ariel's blog. That will be all the blogs that I would consider. I have 35 pupils all accounted for. Congrats Cherlyn for finding a truly appropriate blogskin. I especially liked the quotation about dreams.
I will consider Che En and Ariel's blog as you had done the work but there may be other probelms with the site or with my ability to access your site. Speak to me about it tomorrow.
The 5 who have yet to link, maybe you should reconsider your options. I will not be marking your blog entries as you have not spoken to me about any extension of the time. If I have 7 groups already linked, I fail to see your difficulty.

Che En

You need to send me an invite I think. I still cannot get into your blog with the email that I had given you, which is my email for this blog comments. I do not know what other problem I might get into so tom after class, you will open the blog for me and then intsruct me how to get into the blog without an invitation.

Che_en, Nicholas and Arile. Pls read

Chen-en, I can't get into your blog. There is no notification for me in my email to register or anything else. The address that you gave me was litchcikin.blogspot.com. Is this correct?
Nicholas - The Blogger msg is - No blog found. Please review the link you gave me. Ok I got the right link from Jia Ying's blog. (5.35 pm)
Ariel - This page cannot be displayed.

First Post for all groups

Complete the exercise on Mood for the Evil Spell and The Perfect Day as a group in your blog.
This is Appendix 1.8a (group work for Question 1 to 3 only) Do not do Questions 4 and 5.

Ground Rules

List your blog site here please
This pic is from a playground created by Nicholas and his group from 2E8 2008. Notice that the tree here is reminiscent of the treehouse in Terabithia. This is how the group had translated the elements in the text into their playground.

1. Leaders are to give me the addresses /links to their project sites in the comments section of this post.

2. Make sure that all your entries are up to date.

3. Make sure that you have listed the names of your members and index numbers clearly in the sidebar of your blog.

4. Make sure that all posts are uploaded by 8 pm on 4/3 for me to check.

NOTE WELL

The font for your blog should be the same size as the font in this blog so I can read your posts easily. Also note that the template of this blog is simple yet cheerful enough for the mood of the novel. You would be graded on your choice of template. If you had created or designed the template yourself then you should indicate this in your blog. If not, I assume you had just used someone else's template (which is ok).
